Health care - Insurance

It is highly advisable for students staying in Poland to have a valid health insurance policy. Otherwise, they have to cover all of their medical treatment expenses out of their own pockets.

EU citizens

The citizens of the member states of the European Union are entitled to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is honoured in Poland. Students are obliged to get EHIC in their home countries prior to arriving in Poland. EHIC enables them to obtain medical benefits from medical providers which have signed contracts with Polish National Health Fund and may be identified by the logo of NFZ with the inscription Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia at the main entrance to their premises.

Holder of the EHIC can receive health services in the following areas:

  • primary health care,
  • specialist out-patient care,
  • hospital treatment,
  • dental treatment,
  • rescue services and ambulance transport

More information is available on the website of the Polish National Health Fund here.

Non-EU citizens

International students from outside the European Union hold, in most cases, private insurance required for visa purposes. Since it mainly covers sudden illnesses, accidents and cases of life threat, as well as requires covering the cost of treatment, reimbursed afterwards by your health insurance company. All other international students staying in Poland on the basis of the temporary stay card may sign a health insurance agreement with the National Medical Insurance Company, Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia (NFZ) (, and pay a monthly insurance fee of 46.80 PLN.The NFZ insurance policy covers the cost of basic medical health care and all other medical services such as laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, medical examinations, different specialist consultations, and hospital expenses.

For the application procedure following documents are required:
  • an application form
  • a copy of your passport
  • a copy of your UCTE student ID
  • a confirmation for UCTE provided by International Centre

  • It is also recommended to purchase an additional insurance package  of medical expenses and personal accident insurance.
